Terms of Use

Last updated: 2026-09-27

Footnote is a small, family-run study tool. These terms are written in plain language on purpose — this is a children's education app from a small project, not a product with a legal department, and we would rather you actually read this than skim past it.

What this app is for

Footnote turns a course's own class material — the slides, worksheets, or readings a family provides — into practice questions, quizzes a learner on them, and tracks how ready they are for a real assessment. It never produces work a learner turns in as their own; it only quizzes and gives feedback.

Accounts

Course material and copyright

Course material — slides, worksheets, readings, textbook excerpts, and the like — belongs to the teachers and publishers who made it. When you provide material to build a course, you are confirming you have the right to use it for your own or your child's studying. We never redistribute or publish anyone's class material; it stays private to the course that owns it, and only the app's own generated practice questions and interface are ever shown publicly.

What we promise about your data

Full detail lives in our Privacy Policy, but the short version: we don't sell your data, we don't share it with advertisers, and a learner's individual answers stay private to the account owner unless the course is explicitly configured to share them.

Accuracy and limits

Practice questions, explanations, and readiness predictions are generated from the course material with the help of an AI model (Anthropic's Claude), which also helps grade some longer written answers. We work to keep every fact tied to a page of material that was actually read, and the owner can review questions and hold back any that look wrong. Even so, this app is a study aid, not a substitute for a teacher, a real assessment, or professional judgment about whether a learner is ready. Please treat readiness scores and predictions as a helpful estimate, not a guarantee.

Acceptable use

Please don't use this app to provide material you don't have the right to use, to try to break or overload the service, or to attempt to access another course or account's data.

Changes

If these terms change in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top of this page.
